Officer Who Shot Clemmons a Four-Year Veteran of Seattle PD

Benjamin L. Kelly, the patrol officer who killed Maurice Clemmons Tuesday, is a four-and-a-half year veteran of the Seattle Police Department who works third watch in the South Precinct.

Benjamin L. Kelly, the patrol officer who killed Maurice Clemmons Tuesday, is a four-and-a-half year veteran of the Seattle Police Department who works third watch in the South Precinct.

Before joining the department in March 2009, Kelly, 39, was a special agent for the Washington State Gambling Commission for roughly two years, in which he made sure gambling license-holders were in compliance.

He also served in the military.

According to records from the Washington State Justice Training Commission, Kelly, has a master's degree. He was placed on administrative leave following the early morning shooting, which is standard procedure. Kelly was checking on a stolen car that was idling, when Clemmons, suspected of killing four Pierce County officers, walked toward him.
