A Pittsburgh Police officer's ballistic vest saved him early Friday during a gun battle with a domestic violence suspect who had told his wife he wanted to kill a cop.

Officer Andrew Baker was hit by 9mm rounds from Tiant Rashaud Mitchell, 25, who opened fire before Baker could exit his squad car. Officer Baker quickly moved behind his vehicle and returned fire, striking Mitchell who now faces multiple felony charges, reports WXPI.

The shooting occurred at about 5 a.m. in Stanton Heights less than a mile from where three Pittsburgh officers were ambushed and killed in 2009 by Richard Poplawski.

The officer-involved shooting was the fourth for Officer Baker in the past year.
