A retired Kentucky police chief was fatally shot Tuesday in what friends called a revenge killing.
Herbert Proffitt had arrested his accused killer several times over his 40-year law enforcement career, reports Lex18. He was checking for mail Tuesday afternoon, when Charles Hammer allegedly drove up and shot Proffitt while he stood on his driveway. Hammer has been apprehended.
Proffitt had retired from law enforcement in 2009. He had served as the chief of the Tompkinsville (Ky.) Police Department. Proffitt had also served as the Monroe County Sheriff and as a court bailiff.
