A Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officer charged with manslaughter was justified when he shot and killed an unarmed man early Saturday, his attorney said Tuesday.

Lawyers representing Officer Randall Kerrick appeared in court Tuesday to answer the charges. A probable cause hearing was set for Oct. 7, reports the Associated Press .

Authorities have said Kerrick shot Jonathan Ferrell 10 times when he approached the officers seeking help after a car wreck. Officers attempted to use a TASER to stop Ferrell that was ineffectual.

On Monday, Ferrell's family members and NAACP representatives questioned whether race was a factor in the shooting of a black man by a white officer.
