The reverend Al Sharpton preached a sermon at a North Charleston church Sunday morning about the police shooting in north Charleston. Some had feared that Sharpton might inflame tensions. Sharpton actually delivered a speech that talked about how well a bad situation was handled.
At Charity Missionary Baptist Church on E. Montague Ave., Sharpton told the crowd that Mayor Keith Summey did the right thing. "When a man stands up and does what is right, I don't care why he does it, you must stand up and say he did what was right."
Summey and Police Chief Eddie Driggers sat in the front and listened, as Sharpton spoke. "What this mayor did is what we've asked mayors to do all over the country. Not to do us a favor, just enforce the law."
He said North Charleston's actions can be a model for the nation. "In the deep South, a mayor and police chief did what we couldn't get mayors in the north and the Midwest to do."
