WV Trooper Shot Searching for Gunman, Suspect Dead

It began when Pocahontas County, WV, Sheriff J.P. Barlow was investigating a single-vehicle crash and was shot at by a man with a rifle Monday.

A West Virginia State trooper was shot and a suspect is dead after an incident Monday evening.

It began when Pocahontas County, WV, Sheriff J.P. Barlow was investigating a single-vehicle crash and was shot at by a man with a rifle Monday, a news release from the West Virginia State Police said.

Trooper First Class J.M. Tallman from the Elkins detachment was one of many who responded to the scene to search a wooded area for the subject. He encountered the man, and State Police said the suspect then shot Tallman in the abdomen and the trooper returned fire, killing the man, reports WCHS/WVAH.

Tallman was transported via medical helicopter to a hospital. West Virginia State Police officials said he was in stable condition.
