An officer with the Chicago Police Department had an accidental discharge of his service weapon, suffering a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his buttocks or upper leg.

An officer with the Chicago Police Department had an accidental discharge of his service weapon on duty, suffering a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his buttocks or upper leg, according to officials.

According to ABC News, after the incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon the officer was transported to a nearby hospital where he was treated and listed in stable condition.

The circumstances that led to the incident have not yet been disclosed.
