A Fort Worth, TX, officer who fatally shot a woman in her own home during a welfare check early Saturday morning has resigned.
Police Chief Ed Kraus told the Dallas Morning News he intended to fire Officer Aaron Dean, who had been on the force since April 2018, on Monday morning, but Dean resigned first.
Video from the officer's body-worn camera shows that he fired one round through the window of the home after ordering a subject to show their hands. The shot killed Atatiana Jefferson, 28.
On Sunday, police said the officer never announced himself as a police officer before he shot into the home killing Jefferson. Her 8-year-old nephew was in the room when she was shot. The boy reportedly witnessed the shooting.
Police were called about 2:30 a.m. to the home after a neighbor, James Smith, called a police non-emergency line to report that the doors to the home were open and all the lights were on.
