Off-Duty Cleveland Officer Killed in Carjacking

Officer Shane Bartek was reportedly approached by the female suspect in the parking lot of his apartment building. The suspect was armed with a gun, Bartek fought her, and the officer was shot twice and killed.

An off-duty Cleveland officer was killed Friday evening when an 18-year-old female attempted to carjack his vehicle and the officer resisted.

Officer Shane Bartek was reportedly approached by the female suspect in the parking lot of his apartment building. The suspect was armed with a gun, Bartek fought her, and the officer was shot twice and killed.

A male suspect was taken into custody after a multi-agency vehicle pursuit of the stolen vehicle, the Cleveland Division of Police reported in a statement.

It's believed the female suspect gave Officer Bartek's car to the man.

Fox 8 reports that the agency told the police union that Officer's Bartek's murder was officially an off-duty death.

However, Cleveland police officials told Fox 8 a ruling had not been made.

Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association President Jeff Follmer says that while Bartek was off duty at the time of the alleged carjacking incident, the 25-year-old acted as an officer when he tried to grab the suspect’s gun.

Follmer said the union wants Bartek’s family to get the support they need during this time.

Tamara McLoyd, 18, was charged Sunday with one count of aggravated murder in Officer Bartek's killing, Fox 8 reports.

Anthony Butler Jr. has been charged with Fleeing, Receiving Stolen Property, as well as "numerous traffic-related charges," WKYC reports.
