During a ceremony to honor first responders for their actions following the Fourth of July mass shooting, officers in North Chicago, IL, were presented flags that have flown over the U.S. Capitol.

Officers honored included the one who initiated the traffic stop on the suspect and the officer who placed the gunman into handcuffs, reports FOX 32.

During the Tuesday evening event, Congressman Brad Schneider presented the flags to Detective Michael Mueller and Officer Gary Grayer, reports WGN9. Five other officers who didn’t attend the event will also receive flags.

"The people, again civilians, but also those who are trained, rising up and going about a task that no one ever wants to have to do, but the people standing with me train for, prepare for, and executed with extraordinary professionalism," Schneider says.
