State emergency management officials urged area residents to be aware of downed powerlines, flooded roads, and storm surge in local sewer systems. Also, parents were told not to let children play in flooded streets because of the potential for stormwater runoff to make them sick.

Pawleys Island police, just north of Georgetown, reported extreme flooding early in the afternoon. But by 3 p.m., the police department reported water had started to recede, however large amounts of debris were left behind and roadways may be blocked.

“Causeways will be closed until all hazards are mitigated,” the Pawleys Island Police Department said in a tweet.
