As Hurricane Ian approached and made landfall in South Carolina early Friday afternoon, various law enforcement agencies were making note of flooding, damage, and power outages as they prepared to respond.
South Carolina Emergency Management Division reports Hurricane Ian made landfall just south of Georgetown as a Category 1 hurricane at 2:05 p.m. Friday. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Hurricane Center, the storm had maximum sustained winds of 85 mph.

State emergency management officials urged area residents to be aware of downed powerlines, flooded roads, and storm surge in local sewer systems. Also, parents were told not to let children play in flooded streets because of the potential for stormwater runoff to make them sick.
Pawleys Island police, just north of Georgetown, reported extreme flooding early in the afternoon. But by 3 p.m., the police department reported water had started to recede, however large amounts of debris were left behind and roadways may be blocked.
“Causeways will be closed until all hazards are mitigated,” the Pawleys Island Police Department said in a tweet.
Horry County Emergency Management reported power outages, coastal flooding, and storm surge. Officials also warned heavy rainfall could cause flash flooding.

Well south of the landfall location, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office reported part of a roadway collapsed on Daufuskie Island and powerlines down in several locations around the county.
