VIDEO: DNA Match Led Police to Suspect in Attempted Murder of South Carolina Deputy

The man police suspected in the attempted murder of Berkeley County, S.C., Deputy Lt. Will Rogers was identified through a DNA match, and was fatally shot by police after opening fire on them, authorities say, reports WCSC .

Jerome Thomas Caldwell, 32, of Mount Pleasant, died after a 10-hour standoff, according to Charleston County Coroner Rae Wooten. Caldwell was pronounced dead at 1:59 p.m., Wooten said.

Charleston Police Chief Greg Mullen said at 1:47 p.m. Thursday, Caldwell came out of the rear of the apartment in which he had been holed up since approximately 4 a.m. and fired multiple shots at police officers. The officers returned fire, fatally striking Caldwell, Mullen said.

Mullen said police negotiators were in contact with Caldwell throughout the day by telephone. A woman and a child were successfully removed from the apartment before the fatal shooting.

Officials say the suspect accused of shooting a Berkeley County, S.C., deputy last week is dead following a shootout with authorities, bringing an end to a 10-hour standoff in downtown Charleston, reports WCSC .

Police say they were continuing tactical operations when the suspect, who had been holed up in an apartment at Robert Mills Manor since around 4 a.m., walked out of the apartment and fired shots at officers. Officers reportedly returned fire, killing the suspect.

Shortly before news broke that the suspect had been killed, over a dozen bangs that sounded like gunfire could be heard coming from the apartment building where SWAT and other officers were gathered.

Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to Robert Mills Manor on Beaufain Street around 4 a.m., where police say a hostage situation was underway with a man accused of shooting Berkeley County Deputy Lt. Will Rogers .
