Verizon has identified Charlotte, NC, as one of 20 U.S. cities that will receive Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband service in 2019. Earlier this year, Verizon committed to providing 5G Ultra Wideband service in more than 30 U.S. cities by the end of 2019. Verizon 5G Ultra Wideband network is currently live in Chicago and Minneapolis.

“Charlotte is an inclusive and welcoming community that embraces innovation and partnerships between the public, private and non-profit sectors,” said Mayor Vi Lyles. “We are excited that Charlotte has been identified as a leading city that will receive Verizon’s new 5G service this year.”

Verizon says 5G will positively impact lives across Charlotte – in places like schools, hospitals, and local businesses. 5G Ultra Wideband service uses new radio technology and device hardware to deliver advanced capabilities to consumers and businesses. When customers move outside Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband coverage area, 5G compatible devices automatically and seamlessly hand off the signal to Verizon’s 4G LTE network, the nation’s best and most reliable 4G LTE network.

“5G Ultra Wideband service is coming to Charlotte this year," said Kyle Malady, Verizon’s chief technology officer. “Today’s announcement is just the start for Charlotte and we’re excited to bring the game-changing power of 5G Ultra Wideband service to consumers, business and government agencies in 2019. Verizon continues to lead in 5G. We launched the first commercial broadband 5G service last October, Verizon 5G Home, and turned up our 5G Ultra Wideband network in Chicago and Minneapolis, providing the world’s first commercial 5G mobile service with a 5G-enabled smartphone.”
