Tenn. Sheriff Gets $2M To Hire Deputies

The Shelby County (Tenn.) Sheriff's Office will get $2 million to hire new deputies as it takes over the responsibilities of 25 school resource officers when Memphis City Schools merges with Shelby County Schools in 2013.

Veteran deputies will fill the school slots, and Shelby County Sheriff Bill Oldham plans to hire 35 new officers to replace them.

Memphis Police Department officials have said that after the school systems form a unified district, they will not continue to provide school officers.
