Stopping Sexting at Its Source

Local law enforcement is joining forces with Farmer's Telecommunications Cooperative (FTC) to combat the growing problem of teen "sexting" in DeKalb County, Ga., with an educational DVD.

Sexting is the act of sending sexually explicit messages or photos electronically, primarily between cell phones. And, it's a growing problem in DeKalb County.

DeKalb Sheriff's Major Crimes Unit Commander Wade Hill said recently that the sheriff's department currently has 15 open cases related to incidences of children between the ages of 12-15 transmitting nude photos of themselves by way of cell phones. He said both the children and the people receiving the photos, even if the pictures are unsolicited, could be charged with local, state and even federal crimes.

FTC Marketing Director Brandi Lyles said the company is currently putting the finishing touches on an educational DVD about the dangers of sexting that will be presented to students in the DeKalb School System beginning in March.
