Report: Police Increasingly Ask Tech Firms for Help in Investigations
A new report released by the Center for Strategic and International Studies found that "local, state, and federal law enforcement made more than 130,000 requests last year for digital evidence from six top technology companies."
A new report released by the Center for Strategic and International Studies found that "local, state, and federal law enforcement made more than 130,000 requests last year for digital evidence from six top technology companies," according to Fortune Magazine.
If the number of requests made to Verizon, AT&T, and Comcast are added to those other six companies — Apple, Facebook Google, Microsoft, Twitter, and Verizon — the number of these requests is more than 660,000.
"The number of law enforcement requests, at least as directed at the major U.S.-based tech and telecom companies, has significantly increased over time," the report said.
The Washington-based think tank called for "a National Digital Evidence Office to establish national policies and support training programs on digital evidence collection as well as the development and distribution of analytical tools," the Fortune article said.
