An undisclosed number of troopers with the New York State Police will soon be wearing body cameras in a recently announced pilot program to investigate their effectiveness and their impact.
According to the Times Union, New York remains one of the few states where the primary law enforcement agency does not have body or dashboard cameras.
It was unclear at the time of the announcement on Monday how many troopers would be participating in the program.
The experiment with body-worn cameras is the result of legislation introduced by State Senator Kevin Parker and state Assemblywoman Latrice Walker, and signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo.
The agency says they experimented in years past with VHS cameras and later digital cameras on a limited number of vehicles but no widespread formal program has ever been enacted.
