Police in New Albany, Miss., are moving forward with plans to add a $10 surcharge to any ticket issued for moving violations. The department told WTVA the charge is to fund technology for the department.
The department wants to improve its place in the world of technology by purchasing new high-tech radio equipment and automated citation software. It would link New Albany Police with the rest of the state.
"The State of Mississippi has come up with one of the best radio systems in the United States probably. It's called the Miss Win radio system," said New Albany Police Chief Chris Robertson.
The chief says Miss Win would be a "win-win" situation for his department as it would link perfectly with the high-tech equipment they already use.
The chief says that with the surcharge, violators fund the system instead of New Albany tax dollars.
