A Southern California fugitive was arrested in Mexico, after taunting law enforcement via Twitter with tweets such as "Catch me if you can."
The U.S. Marshals Service's Fugitive Task Force took Wanda Podgurski, 60, into custody on July 4—six months after she skipped town while on trial for tax evasion and fraud.
Podgurski of Manhattan Beach was sentenced in absentia last month to 20 years and four months in state prison after a San Diego jury found her guilty of 29 felony counts of faking a disability and collecting more than $664,000 in insurance payouts, reports the Daily Breeze.
While on the run, Podgurski created a Twitter account that followed only District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis. She posted links to news reports about her fugitive status.
The LAPD's CATCH (Computer and Technology Crime High-Tech) Response Team extracted embedded geotag information in Podgurski's tweets to pinpoint the geographic location where she was been tweeting. The info was then handed over to the U.S. Marshals Service, reports Forbes.
