FLIR Systems of Portland, Ore., has announced the launch of the H-Series line of hand-held law enforcement thermal imaging cameras that feature several new tactical features and four times the resolution of competing systems, according to the company.

The H-Series thermal cameras, developed by FLIR's Commercial Vision Systems Division, capitalize on FLIR's Tau thermal camera core, which is lower cost, lighter weight, smaller, and uses less power than any previous camera core, according to FLIR.

The 320x240 core enables the camera to see heat rather than light. The thermal camera is available in two models—the patrol and command—offering multiple lens options for each. The H-Series features a two-sided hand strap, brightness control adjustment, and the ability to switch the display from black hot and white hot.

"The H-Series is an outstanding example of FLIR's ongoing strategy to expand new markets for thermal imaging by reducing costs and offering innovative new products through broad distribution channel," said Earl Lewis, FLIR's president and chief executive. "FLIR revolutionized airborne law enforcement operations 30 years ago, and today we are bringing the same capability to the officers on the ground."

The H-Series will be offered at prices starting at $4,999.
