The decision by voters in Washington and Colorado to legalize marijuana for recreational use has already made its mark in law enforcement. Earlier this week, the Seattle Police Department sent a memo telling officers to issue verbal warnings to subjects who smoke it in public.

Public toking would still violate the law—voters legalized recreational use of up to one ounce in the privacy of a home—yet the department is already shifting its enforcement strategy.

On Friday, Pierce County (Wash.) Sheriff's deputies responded to a home invasion where two armed, masked men were shot and killed while attempting to rob marijuana and cash at a grower's Puyallup home.
