A 34-year veteran of the Hometown Police Department was killed Saturday morning while investigating a DUI crash.

Officer James Kouski, 58, was hit by a sedan while standing near the road at approximately 3 a.m. Saturday. Kouski succumbed to his injuries shortly after the crash, WGN reports.

A memorial procession was held Saturday afternoon for the fallen officer where he was saluted by residents of the Chicago suburb and by officers from other local police departments.

The driver of the sedan reportedly fled the scene. He is now in custody and charges are expected. His name has not yet been released.
