An officer with the Lake City (FL) Police Department was shot while making a welfare check at a home that had been recently struck by bullets.

According to ClickOrlando.com, officers were dispatched to a neighborhood shortly after midnight on Tuesday night after reports of gunfire in the area.

The department said that upon arrival they discovered bullet holes in a home and went to the front door to check on the well-being of any people inside.

They identified themselves at police officers just before shots were fired through the door from inside the home

One officer was struck, the department said in a press release.

The injured officer was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
