An officer with the Jefferson City (MO) Police Department was shot in the chest and saved by body armor, and a suspect was fatally shot Wednesday evening after a vehicle pursuit ended with gunfire.

According to CBS News, the pursuit began Wednesday night after Jefferson City officers investigating a weapons offense tried to stop a vehicle in connection with previous shootings, and the driver of the vehicle wouldn’t stop.

The pursued vehicle stopped, two people emerged from the car, and fled on foot. Officers pursued them into a wooded area and during a struggle one of the people fired at officers, hitting one in the chest, police say. Another officer reportedly returned fire, killing the suspect.

The injured officer is in stable condition in an area hospital.

The other suspect was apprehended in the wooded area shortly after the shooting.
