Officers with the Kirkland (WA) Police Department were forced to open fire on a man who had threatened to hurt or kill a young child.

According to Fox News, the man was holding the child tightly in his arms when officers attempted to negotiate with him.

Officers had reportedly been on scene for approximately an hour when the suspect's actions toward the child heightened, and "an officer was forced to intervene by shooting the suspect to prevent immediate harm to the child," according to Kirkland Police Department spokesman.

The child was transported to a nearby hospital for precautionary medical evaluation.
