Officers with the West Liberty (IA) Police Department were recently joined by fire and EMS colleagues in a safety and awareness training for encounters with subjects on the autism spectrum.
According to KWWL, West Liberty Police Chief Kary Kinmonth said the city has had high profile cases, particularly missing person cases, involving autistic people.
The free training focused on identifying autism and reviewing autism symptoms.
Earlier this year, the department designed and sold special police patches with the puzzle pattern that represents autism awareness. That effort raised $3,000.
