The Powhatan County (VA) Sheriff's Office is reporting that its decision to invest in a K-9 program led to the rescue of two children lost in the woods this weekend.

Deputies were called to the scene where parents and neighbors had been searching for the two missing 8-year-olds, the Sheriff's Office reported on Facebook. The search had been underway for 45 minutes and it was getting dark.

K-9 Bane and his handlers and other deputies were deployed to aid in the search. Within 15 minutes of K-9 Bane entering the woods he was able to track and locate the children, the Sheriff's Office says.

"Maintaining a K-9 program is expensive and very time consuming and that is why many agencies the size of the Powhatan Sheriff's Office do not have one. But incidents like last night's two 8 year old children being lost in the woods are why the Sheriff keeps the program going strong," the Sheriff's Office said.
