A McKinney, Texas, Police K-9 was killed along with a shooting suspect during an officer-involved shooting Thursday afternoon (March 13) at a local hotel, police said.
According to a news release from the McKinney Police Department, officers responded to the Red Roof Inn around 2:44 p.m. to the report of a shooting.
Upon arrival, police said officers found a 52-year-old woman suffering from a gunshot wound in her upper body. She was transported to the hospital, WFAA reports. She was in stable condition Thursday.
A male suspect, later identified by law enforcement as Freddie Ware, 43, retreated into his hotel room and barricaded himself, police said. SWAT and crisis negotiators were called to the scene and talked to the suspect on the phone.
McKinney PD said that about 30 minutes later, Ware came out of the room and walked down a staircase, yelling at officers before walking away. According to police, officers deployed a K-9 to help arrest Ware; however, when they did this, Ware pulled out a gun.
Police said officers fired at Ware, striking him. Officers provided medical aid at the scene before taking him to a hospital, where he later died.
During the shooting, McKinney PD K-9, identified Azi was mortally wounded.
The incident is under investigation by the Texas Rangers.
