When officers in New Orleans exchanged gunfire with an armed robbery suspect on Sunday night, at least five people waiting at a bus stop were caught in the crossfire.

Of the five individuals who were struck, four are reported to be in stable condition. One was in critical condition.

The gunman was also struck. He reportedly died after being transported to a nearby hospital.

According to CNN, the department said that officers investigating recent armed robberies approached a man deemed a person of interest. The man suddenly opened fire on the officers, who then returned fire.

New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Shaun Ferguson told reporters that it was too early to tell who fired the bullets that hit the bystanders.
