David Woods, 46, was serving a life sentence for second-degree murder at the Gaston Correctional Center after pleading guilty in 1992 for killing an elderly woman with a hammer in Harnett County.

Officials said Woods was driving a Ford pickup truck that belonged to the city of Lowell when it crashed at Exit 14 off I-85.

He was considered a minimum custody inmate and was part of a city work detail when he got behind the wheel of the truck and took off at speeds that reached over 100 mph, WSOC TV reports.
