South Carolina Representative Joshua Putnam is working on a draft bill that would allow teachers in the state to apply for a special concealed weapons permit that would allow them to carry guns at school, reports WSPA.

The special CWP would be voluntary and the bill would require principals and superintendents to vote to allow their teachers to take the class. The class would be created and taught by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and would be the same sort of training given to police officers when they are trained in active shooter situations. Teachers would only get the license if they passed the class.

The weapons would have to remain concealed and holstered on their person at all times. Students and parents would not know who would be carrying.

The bill aims to give schools that don’t have resource officers extra protection.
