A Virginia State trooper was shot in the foot Thursday after another trooper fired at an attacking dog while conducting a joint narcotics search by the Isle of Wight (Va.) Sheriff's Office and state police, officials said, reports the Daily Press.

The search also led to the arrests of three people on drug-related charges.

The incident happened about 6:15 a.m. while team members from both agencies were conducting the search at a home. When they entered the home, a dog attacked one of the troopers, and another trooper shot at the dog.

One of the rounds struck a trooper in the foot. The dog was fatally wounded, and no one from Isle of Wight fired a weapon, according to the sheriff's office.

That trooper was taken to a local hospital after suffering an injury that was not considered life-threatening and later released.
