Authorities discovered the remnants of a counterfeit ketchup operation in a Dover, N.J., warehouse, after exploding bottles left a mess.
Company officials, who visited Dover last week, believe someone purchased traditional Heinz Ketchup and transferred it from large bladders into individual bottles labeled "Simply Heinz," a premium variety made with sugar instead of high fructose corn sweetener, reports the Star-Ledger.
Tomatoes and vinegar are both acidic and when combined with sugars will ferment when left in the heat. Pressure builds up inside the bottle when then explodes.
