A shotgun blast from a suspect hiding inside a western Ohio mobile home park killed a Clark County Sheriff's deputy, while she photographed a footprint, early on New Year's Day.
The shooting triggered a deadly gun battle that closed Interstate-70 for several hours and left another officer injured and the suspect dead.
Dep. Suzanne Waughtel Hopper, 40, was married and a mother of two children. She had responded to shots-fired call at an Enon Beach trailer park at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, reports the Springfield News-Sun.
Officers from five local agencies and three SWAT teams then arrived at the trailer park, engaging in a fierce gun battle with 57-year-old suspect Michael Ferryman that was captured by local television news outlet WDTN.
German Township Police officers had attempted to retrieve Dep. Hopper's body. The entrenched suspect wounded patrolman Jeremy Blum, as "many, many, many" rounds were exchanged between officers and the suspect, according to Clark County Sheriff Gene Kelly.
