Two NYPD Officers Shot In Harlem Gunfight at 500-Person Barbecue

Angel Alvarez, 23, shot an killed 21-year-old Luis Soto, then exchanged fire with at least five officers. Alvarez fired at least four rounds, and Officer Michael Tadeschi was likely struck by a friendly fire round that deflected after striking his ballistic vest.

Two New York police officers were shot early Sunday in a 2:30 a.m. gunfight between revelers attending a barbecue and responding officers, the New York Times reports.

Angel Alvarez, 23, is alleged to have shot and killed 21-year-old Luis Soto after fighting with him on top of a car.

Alvarez then exchanged fire with four responding police officers in a hail of 50 bullets. The officers fired 46 of the rounds, including one that struck Officer Michael Tadeschi, whose ballistic vest deflected the bullet.

More than 20 bullets struck Alvarez, who was taken into custody and is listed in critIcal condition. A New York Daily News story reported that police recovered a loaded .38-caliber revolver from Alvarez.
