The new police chief in Portland, Maine, has said officers shouldn't be required to always wear their hats while patrolling this city of 64,000 residents, the Portland Press Herald reports.

Chief James Craig agrees that caps are important, but said officers don't need to wear them every time they exit a patrol car. Former Chief Tim Burton had mandated the rule, because he felt officers exuded more professionalism and command presence, while wearing the hats.
