The West Memphis (Ark.) PD will begin equipping its officers with AR-15 rifles, as a result of the parking-lot gun battle at Wal-Mart in May, the Commercial Appeal reports.
Patrol officers will now be able to carry the rifles, which would not have prevented the duty deaths of two officers, but would have more quickly ended the standoff in the Wal-Mart parking lot where the suspects were cornered about 90 minutes from where officer Bill Evans and Sgt. Brandon Paudert were murdered, police said.
Suspects Jerry Kane, 45, and Joseph Kane, his 16-year-old son, were both killed in the shootout with officers.
