Officer Richard Donahue told CBS News he would return to police work following his recovery from the shootout with the Boston Marathon bombing suspects.
Officer Donahue, a transit officer with the MBTA, gave his first interview to CBS' John Miller about what happened April 18 when he responded to an officer down call. MIT Officer Sean Collier, a friend from the police academy, has been fatally shot in the head, and Donahue arrived on scene.
In a fierce gun battle with Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev where bombs were thrown at officers, Donahue was wounded when a round struck his leg. That round was likely fired by another officer, reports CNN. Officers from various agencies fired more than 300 rounds during the incident.
Officers at the scene provided trauma care to Donahue, who lost all his blood and needed to be resuscitated by doctors when his heart stopped.
Donahue remains in the ICU and is learning how to walk again. He told Miller he looks forward to returning to a desk job and then to patrol. Earlier this month, Donahue wrote a blog post thanking his fellow officers for saving his life.
