Ernesto Miranda's story began over a dozen years before his untimely death in the downtown skid row section of Phoenix, AZ, only a few blocks from where his story ended. It is presented here by the police officer who made the investigation and arrest, and took the confession later ruled inadmissible as evidence by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Utah Honors Deputy Killed In 1902
The Utah Law Enforcement Memorial Board has honored a deputy killed in the line of duty in 1902 with a headstone stating his sacrifice to his community. The board unveiled the headstone in the Scofield Cemetery for Thomas Nalley.

Vintage Patrol: 1962 Chrysler Newport
The Orange County (Calif.) Sheriff's Department issued 1962 Chrysler Newport sedans that offered deputies a 5.9-liter, V-8 (361 CID) rear-wheel powertrain with push button transmission. The engine was rated at 265 hp.

At the present time, only a few agencies still issue Beretta or S&W double-action pistols. In view of the currently available semi-auto models from Glock, S&W, and Springfield, use of double-action pistols has become much more limited.

Bringing Back Bicycle Patrol
The main advantage of using a police bicycle is stealth. Everyone is looking out for sirens in the distance and preparing for police cruisers to roll up. However, unless the bad guys are covering all access points with lookouts, the police bicycle can sneak in through what would ordinarily be considered inaccessible vehicle entry points.

Classic Chrysler Patrol Cars
Chrysler has been producing Plymouth or Dodge patrol cars since the early 1930s, and for many of those early years Plymouth turned out some special cars for police work. The earliest came when the Washington State Patrol began using a 1932 Plymouth 1932 PB coupe, according to AllPar.com. Chrysler offered its first police package on 1956 Dodge Coronets. The 1970s brought the era of Mopar squads.

50 Years After Miranda
Officers on the job before 1966 knew that the right to remain silent was guaranteed by the Constitution, but no officer from that era ever thought it was his job to remind offenders of their rights. That changed with the arrest of Ernesto Miranda in March 1963 and the landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision that followed.
