Deputy Aliyah Miller saw the distraught woman and the Columbus officer walking toward her. The sheriff’s office said on Facebook that Miller “realized the woman had a baby and was threatening to jump into the river with the infant.”

The slain deputy, Lt. Michael Boutte, was shot trying to get out of his vehicle, Sheriff Ricky Adam told local media. The suspect then fired at a second responding deputy who returned fire and wounded the suspect, Adam said.

The man then got into the empty police car, turned it around and drove toward officers, he said. The man struck and killed one of his family members who was in the road.
