A St. Louis police officer is recovering in the hospital after a serious crash Thursday afternoon while responding to a call involving a stolen vehicle. A civilian was also hospitalized.

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department said the crash happened around 1 p.m. at an intersection in north St. Louis, KSDK reports.

Police say the officer, whose identity was not released, is part of the department's anti-crime task force. He was responding with lights and sirens to assist fellow officers with a felony arrest involving suspects inside a stolen vehicle. As he drove through the intersection, the officer crashed into another car with a woman inside.

The officer’s patrol car caught fire following the crash, with him still inside. He was rushed to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in serious condition, but stable. The officer had serious leg and wrist injuries, including what police believe could be a broken femur.
