A Rockford, Illinois, police K-9 was shot and killed and the suspect wounded in a shootout with police Sunday, according to authorities.
Rockford Police said officers were investigating a “domestic situation” around 1:46 p.m.
The suspect identified by authorities as Malik Trotter was located a short time later, police said.
Rockford Police Officer Vargas and his K-9 partner, Nyx, pursued Trotter on foot, according to the State’s Attorney, and K-9 Nyx pursued Trotter over a fence, where three shots rang out, MyStateLine reports.
After seeing his Nyx suffering from gunshot wounds, Officer Vargas reportedly spotted Trotter across the street, police say.
Authorities said Trotter fired his weapon at the officer, who then returned fire, striking Trotter in the leg.
K-9 Nyx died at the scene. The suspect was transported to the hospital.
