Safarilandhas introduced the Protech Body Bunker Breacher Type IIIA shield developed to meet the ballistic needs of entry teams in scenarios using explosives.
The shield and viewport have been independently tested against 17-grain fragmentation with a V50 of 2,078 feet per second (fps). It's rated to defeat five impacts from 9mm 124 gr. FMJ, .44 Magnum 240 gr. LSWC, Tokarev 7.62x25mm 85 gr. FMJ (steel jacket), 5.7x28mm 28 gr. SS195/HP, 5.7x28mm 40 gr. SS197/Blue Tip, Winchester Ranger 9mm 127 gr. +P+ SXT, and .357 SIG 125 gr. TMJ.
The adjustable helmet forehead padding system and horizontal foot brace provide the shield operator with shield stabilization during explosive blasts. The horizontal ambidextrous handle allows the operator's arm to be kept in a strong-arm position when carrying the shield, distributing the weight of the shield. The strapping system on the body side of the shield provides multiple-position carrying options as well as additional standoff protection against back-face deformation.
The breacher shield is made of uni-directional polyethylene material with an aluminum alloy outer skin to protect the ballistic properties of the shield and provide added resistance to fragmentation. The shield measures 31x48 inches, weighs 31 pounds and offers 1,488 square-inches of ballistic coverage.
The multi-layered 4x16-inch viewport incorporates an acrylic/polycarbonate laminate composite to offer multi-hit and fragmentation protection. The curved design of the viewport provides the operator with peripheral vision and overall improved visibility and includes overlapping ballistics to reduce the potential of penetration.
"The Body Bunker Breacher Shield was designed to address the specific needs of explosive entry teams," according to Dan McNeil, Safariland's category director for tactical armor. "This shield provides breaching teams with the confidence they need when they need it the most."
