Police: Army Captain Wounds Two Pa. Officers, After Killing Four

An Army captain who allegedly killed four people and wounded two officers in a shootout late Saturday was found dead Sunday with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Leonard John Egland, who returned from his third tour of duty overseas a week ago, was found dead in a vacant lot near York and Almshouse Roads in Warwick Township at 3:40 p.m. on Sunday.

Egland is believed to have killed four people including his mother-in-law, former or estranged wife, her boyfriend, and the boyfriend's young son. Authorities believe Egland, 37, killed the wife, boyfriend and boy in Virginia, before driving to Buckingham Township, Pa., where he killed the mother-in-law.

Egland then dropped his daughter off at a Quakerstown hospital and headed toward Doylestown, where officers spotted his black Dodge pickup truck and initiated a pursuit.

Egland fired at a Doylestown Borough officer and state trooper, causing injuries to both.
