A West Bloomfield (Mich.) Police officer was shot and killed when he entered the bedroom of a suicidal man and was met with gunfire late Sunday.

The shooting led to a standoff police resolved Monday afternoon when a Michigan State Police robot helped police confirm the suspect was dead inside the home.

Five officers had responded to a report of shots fired inside a home on Forest Edge Lane at 10 p.m. Sunday. They were met by family members who said the subject, Rick Coley, may have killed himself, reports the Detroit Free Press.

The officers entered the home and reached the bedroom, where they called out Coley's name and were met with gunfire. Officer Patrick O'Rourke, 39, was hit by gunfire and critically wounded.

The officers were able to remove Officer O'Rourke from the house. He was transported to McLaren Hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds. He was a 12-year veteran and married father of four children.
