U.S. border agents seized $1 million in marijuana in southern Arizona Tuesday that was concealed in a shipment of bell peppers, U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced.

A Mexican national was arrested at the Nogales Commercial Facility for attempting to smuggle more than a ton of marijuana into the United States.

A 35-year-old driver of a tractor-trailer was taken aside for additional inspection after an anomaly was discovered using a commercial x-ray system. A narcotics detection canine alerted to the presence of drugs.

An additional search led to the discovery of 280 packages of marijuana worth slightly more than $1.68 million. The drugs and tractor-trailer were seized. The subject was turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement’' Homeland Security Investigations.
