Riverside County Sheriff's K-9 Sultan
Riverside County (Calif.) sheriff's deputies late Wednesday shot a man to death who they say had killed a sheriff's K-9 hours earlier near Hemet.
The man was holed up in a crawl space below a house on Clark Drive when deputies fired tear gas into that area, Sgt. Mike Manning told the Press Enterprise. The unidentified man emerged, holding a handgun, and was shot, Manning said. He died at the scene.
The drama began about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, while deputies were looking for the suspect who was wanted for unspecified crimes.
The police dog named Sultan was sent into the crawl space to find the felon, but returned injured and soon died, said Deputy Albert Martinez, who didn't describe the nature of the injuries.
Sultan was a Belgian Malinois-German shepherd mix who began patrolling the streets with Deputy Mark Wallace in November 2013.
