VIDEO: Man Wanted for Shooting Tulsa Officer Kills Self During Police Raid
A man accused of shooting a Tulsa officer during a pursuit Sunday fatally shot himself in the head last night after being surrounded by police, according to police.
Jeremie Shawn Kelly, 26, reportedly turned the gun on himself as a special operations team prepared to enter the house where he was taking refuge on East Reading Street near North Sheridan Road around 6:55 p.m. Kelly was taken to a local hospital. He died at 7:29 p.m., police confirmed.
Hours earlier, Kelly allegedly shot Cpl. Gene Watkins in the right leg during a pursuit. Watkins was hospitalized, and his injuries were not life-threatening, police said.
Officer Demita Kinard told the Tulsa World the incident began when the Fugitive Warrants Unit pulled over Kelly in a vehicle in the 1000 block of North Sheridan Road to execute a warrant for domestic violence by strangulation around 3:40 p.m.
Kelly reportedly sped away, with police in pursuit. He then got out of the vehicle, and the pursuit turned into a foot chase. Watkins was shot during the foot pursuit, Kinard said.
