A Jefferson Parish (LA) Sheriff's SWAT unit on Saturday shot and killed a man who holed up in a stranger’s house in Metairie just minutes after he shot and wounded a deputy responding to a domestic disturbance call about midday.

Sheriff Newell Normand said Deputy Nicholas Songy, 48, was at University Medical Center and was “alert and doing well” just after 1 p.m. He was released later in the day.

Authorities later identified the man killed in the upper level of a home in the 3500 block of 46th Street as Isreal Flores, 38, no known local address. A relative of Flores told investigators he often stayed at his girlfriend's home at 1010 Severn Ave.

Normand said the SWAT team, which stormed the second floor of the 46th Street house using exterior stairs, ordered the man, who appeared to be in his 30s, to lower his weapon and shot him when he refused.

The incident began when Songy arrived in the 1000 block of Severn Avenue to investigate a domestic disturbance call. After speaking with the woman who made the call, Songy, who was alone, went into the backyard, where he encountered an armed man, Normand said.

Songy and the man, later identified as Flores, exchanged gunfire — two shots from the man and at least two from Songy. Songy was shot in the leg, and Flores was hit as well.
