When a 4-year-old in Sweetwater County, Wyoming wandered from his yard while playing with the family's dogs, the mother called 911 to get help locating him.
According to Buckrail, K-9 Jara and handler Deputy Derek Morrell with the Rock Springs (WY) Police Department responded. They got a description of the boy and set off on a search.
K-9 Jara picked up on the scent and led Morrell to a parked car, where the boy was lying on the driver's side floorboard.
With temperatures nearing 90 degrees, officers briefly entertained the idea of smashing a window, but after running the tags determined that the owner was nearby.
They got the keys and freed the boy from the car.
In a letter commending Morrell and Jara for their role in this incident, sheriff’s office patrol supervisor Sergeant Matt Bartolotta, wrote, "Deputy Morrell’s and Deputy Jara’s actions may have very well saved this child’s life. Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office and the citizens of Sweetwater County are lucky to have a duo like them."
